How to make this Mediterranean layered hummus dip.
- Prep ingredients: Allow the feta and Greek yogurt to sit on the counter for 20–30 minutes to come to room temperature. This will help them blend together more easily and create a smoother, creamier whipped feta.
- Prepare the toppings: chop the red onion, kalamata olives, sun dried tomatoes, oregano, thyme, and parsley. Set aside.
- Prepare the whipped feta: Place the room temperature Greek yogurt, crumbled feta cheese, honey, and lemon juice in a food processor or high speed blender. Blend until smooth about 15-20 seconds. Stir in the olive oil, garlic, and lemon peel.
- Plate the dip. Spread the hummus on a 10-12″ sized serving plate, then carefully spread the whipped feta over the hummus leaving space around the edge for the hummus to show through.
- Add the toppings. Top with sun dried tomatoes, olives, red onion. Then sprinkle almonds, parsley, thyme, and oregano over the dip. A drizzle of olive oil and extra feta is optional.
Whipped feta and hummus dip key ingredients and substitutions
What type of hummus should I use?
Buy a good quality hummus, most flavors will do well with the lemony whipped feta and the toppings.
Or, make your own. I personally have made this recipe by Cookie + Kate many times.
What’s the best feta cheese for whipped feta?
Many whipped feta recipes use a block of sheep’s milk feta packed in brine, prized for its rich flavor and creamy texture.
For this recipe, I’ve had excellent results using Greek or French sheep’s milk feta packed in brine.
French sheep’s milk feta is creamier and milder and blends into a smooth and creamy dip.
I’ve even used French feta crumbles made with cow’s milk—something that’s often discouraged for whipped feta—and found that they worked surprisingly well.
Choosing the best Greek yogurt for this whipped feta dip.
Using whole milk, full fat Greek yogurt will provide the most flavor and texture, but feel free to use a low fat or nonfat Greek yogurt. The nonfat Greek yogurt is what I used the most often when testing this recipe.
I do not recommend Greek-style yogurt or regular yogurt.
Can I substitute the fresh herbs?
Fresh oregano, thyme, and parsley go perfectly with this recipe. I strongly suggest sticking with the fresh parsley.
If using dried oregano or thyme, use about 1/4 teaspoon of each.
Fresh dill would be great with this recipe, perhaps with chopped green onion.

What I learned while making this recipe.
What to expect from whipped feta and hummus dip?
Feta, Greek yogurt, lemon, and garlic all contribute to the bright, tangy flavor of the whipped feta layer. The creamy hummus balances the tangy flavor of the whipped feta for the perfect bite.
Recipe testing notes.
I spent a lot of time testing this recipe to avoid the overly tangy, bitter, or runny results that can sometimes happen with whipped feta dips.
Adding the garlic, lemon zest, and olive oil after blending the feta and Greek yogurt helps create a more balanced flavor, while limiting the blending time to 15–20 seconds keeps the dip thick, creamy, and spreadable.
Recipe FAQs & Tips.
Is whipped feta better with Greek yogurt or cream cheese?
Greek yogurt gives the whipped feta a light, creamy, and easily spreadable texture while adding protein and creating a fresher, less heavy dip than cream cheese. It is more traditional than cream cheese.
How long will the whipped feta and hummus dip last?
The whipped feta alone will last in the refrigerator for about 7 days.
Once you put this dip together, I suggest consuming within 4-5 days.
Recipe tips for the best flavored lemon whipped feta dip.
- Room temperature Greek yogurt and feta allows for better blending of ingredients and a creamier dip. Measure your yogurt and feta and allow to sit on the counter at least 20-30 minutes.
- Use full fat Greek yogurt for best flavor. I’ve used nonfat and full fat yogurt and both tasted wonderful, with the full fat Greek yogurt having an edge for thickness and creaminess over the nonfat. In this recipe, use what you prefer, but keep it to Greek yogurt.
- Greek or French sheep’s milk feta packed in brine both go well in this recipe. The French version being milder and perfect for this dip. I’ve even used the cow’s milk French feta crumbles wit success. Go with the brine packed feta.
- Add the extra flavors at the end. To allow for adjusting the flavor, add the lemon zest, garlic, and olive oil after the feta and yogurt have been blended. Also, these ingredients can become bitter when mixed too vigorously. One comment I saw on many recipes.
- When zesting the lemon, remember to use a gentle touch and shoot for removing only the yellow part of the lemon. The underlying, white part of the lemon can be bitter. A good microplane and a light touch will help.
- Use fresh garlic. Garlic can also taste bitter if it has begun to sprout. It is edible, and if you want to use it, cut the clove in half and remove the sprout from inside. Also, never buy the stuff in a jar. The flavor and freshness is just not the same.
- Blend just until creamy. Over-blending can cause the mixture to break down too much producing a thinner dip. About 15-20 seconds is all you need. I have never had this issue, but I’ve seen this noted in other recipe comments.
- Allow recipe to sit for flavors to develop. Prepare the dip up to 2 hours in advance and refrigerate until ready to serve. As it rests, the flavors meld together, creating a creamier, more balanced dip with a less pronounced tang from the feta, yogurt, lemon, and garlic.
