About this recipe
Roasted, oven baked sweet potatoes — whether cut into chunks, fries, rounds, wedges, or mashed — are one of my all-time favorite sides–YEAR ROUND! I make them often, and I’m always chasing that irresistible caramelized flavor.
For this recipe, I wanted to try something different, and hot honey came to mind–how perfect with bacon and feta to balance the sweet flavor of the sweet potato wedges.
I tried cutting the sweet potatoes into fries, but they didn’t hold up well to the toppings. Therefore, sweet potato wedges came to mind and worked perfectly.
While testing the hot honey recipe, I discovered that smoked paprika and fresh garlic added a wonderful depth, balancing the sweetness with smoky, savory notes.
The result? A combination that’s salty, sweet, and spicy — and completely addictive.

What type of sweet potato is best for roasting?
Choose the orange and red skinned potatoes. These are known as the “moist varieties” and tend to be sweeter. In the U.S., Beauregard sweet potatoes are most common and the variety I used in this recipe.

How do I cut a sweet potato into wedges?
First, wash your sweet potatoes and allow to dry if time allows.
Peeling the sweet potato is up to you, but I prefer to peel them so all that seasoning covers each bite of the sweet potato. If you eat the skin, then leave them on.
Before slicing, make sure the sweet potato sits flat and doesn’t roll. If needed, trim a thin slice from the bottom to create a stable base.
Carefully slice the sweet potato in half lengthwise using a sharp knife.
After slicing the sweet potato in half, slice each half lengthwise into 1/2″ slices.
Basic sweet potato roasting tips.
Tip #1: A hot oven. Be sure to preheat your oven to 425F before adding the sweet potatoes. The high heat allows the sweet potatoes to achieve a beautifully brown exterior while leaving the center creamy and cooked through.
Tip#2: A single layer of sweet potatoes on an unlined baking sheet. Using a large sheet pan or two smaller sheet pans allows you to place them in a single layer. The more contact with the hot pan, the more caramelization you will achieve.
Tip#3: Leave room in between individual slices. Place the slices on the baking sheet providing for space between slices allows for even cooking and that brown exterior. Overcrowding promotes steaming vs. roasting.
Tip#4: Bake as close to the heat source as possible. I like to roast sweet potatoes on the lower rack.
Tip#4: Flip the sweet potatoes over to the other side. You want both sides of your sweet potato to achieve that beautiful brown color.
Tip#5: Switch out baking sheets while roasting. If you are using more than one baking sheet, switching the trays in the oven will evenly brown the sweet potatoes.
