Who doesn’t love chocolate for breakfast or as a snack! Healthy, low in sugar, and portable, healthy chocolate oatmeal cups are quick and easy. Try them with your favorite fruit, yogurt, or even peanut butter.
What’s to love about this recipe?
Well, chocolate for one thing! Cocoa powder is full of antioxidants and has no sugar, yet makes these very chocolatey.
This is a one-bowl recipe, that comes together in about 5 minutes and bakes for about 15 minutes.
Feel free to have fun and use any filling you want.
After storing the filled cups in the refrigerator, they take on the flavor of the filling and the texture becomes slightly chewy–which I love!
Helpful tips for healthy chocolate oatmeal cups
Oatmeal
In this recipe, I use old fashioned oats, though I would think you could use instant as well. The texture will not be as chewy.
I do not recommend steel cut oats in this recipe. There isn’t enough liquid to soften or “cook” steel cut oats. It would be like trying to eat a rock!

Cocoa powder
The cocoa powder is important and key to flavor in the chocolate oatmeal cups.
There are mainly two types of cocoa powder: natural cocoa powder and Dutch-processed cocoa powder. Natural cocoa powder is acidic and has a lighter color, while Dutch-processed cocoa powder has been treated with an alkalizing agent to neutralize its acidity and has a darker color.
Dutch process cocoa tends to taste milder, while natural cocoa powder can have a sharper flavor.
For this recipe, I used natural cocoa powder. If you have Dutch processed, that should work too. Actually, some prefer the flavor of Dutch-processed because it is milder.
What to use for filling?
Whatever you desire!
Yogurt, peanut butter, pudding, whipped cream, jelly, ice cream.
Fresh fruit.
Drizzle with chocolate or peanut butter sauce.
